1st CUBIES ANNIVERSARY (July 4, 2007)

Theme: “Looking Back, A Year Ago”

This day marks the 1st anniversary since the CUBIES Game was approved as a Thesis Proposal during CBG 2006 or officially known as Games of the VIIth Colympiad. It became known as the only Thesis of Batch 2007 to use J2ME as the base software.

During the months of June and July of the preceding year, it has been a hard time for all 4th Year CCSS Students at UE Manila to think for a Thesis Proposal to be approved by their respective Thesis Adviser. Enter the heroes of this article: Warren Azarcon, Argel Castillo, Ronald Dee, and Vincent Paranpan. They must also submit a proposal which is to be approved by our THESA Adviser before August.

On June 20, our group submitted 2 proposals. I proposed a Major Subjects (Math, Science, and English) Tutorial. While my thesismate Warren proposed a Bingo Game which uses chemical symbols. Since there are many existing theses of the same topic in our library, then it was easily rejected by Sir Dhonne Manalo, our THESA Adviser.

2 weeks later, our group submitted another 2 proposals. My thesismate Vincent proposed a Shooting Game where the player destroys many enemy ships to get high score. The concept of Vincent’s proposal was based from the Sky Force Game. Then I proposed a Puzzle Game where the player uses a block to destroy blocks of similar pattern. The concept of my proposal was based from the Flipull Game. The 2 proposals were immediately approved by our THESA Adviser to our surprise.

Of course, only one proposal has to be chosen. My thesismates and I had unanimously elected the Flipull Game as our Thesis Proposal. Originally, this game was intended as a PC Game to be created using Visual Basic 6. But after a brief talk with our THESA Adviser. Our group was influenced to change it as a Mobile Game using J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition).

3 weeks after the approval, the official title of the game was retroactively called as “CUBIES: A 2D Mobile Game” and had used it ever since. By the time of the conception of this Mobile Game during CBH 2006 or officially known as Games of the VIIIth Colympiad, the idea of Tetris Game and simplification of the Flipull Game were considered, which was eventually approved by our SWPRJ Adviser, Sir Arne Bana. Thus, a new concept for the CUBIES Game was born.

During the months of August to September, Chapters 1 to 3 of the CUBIES Documentation was completed. Then from December to March, Chapters 4 and 5 of the CUBIES Documentation were done completely. And also the CUBIES Game was created using the following software: Adobe Photoshop, Notepad++, and J2ME Wireless Toolkit.

Since the release of CUBIES Game on March 10, 2007, this Mobile Game became a huge success. It now has 3 different versions: Version 1.1 (Original), Version 1.2 (Alternative), and Version 1.3 (Neo). It is also being played in different countries around the world as it is now available for download free of charge. Furthermore, it is now known as “The First Mobile Game Thesis in UE-CCSS History”.

I would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to all of the people who had helped our group in doing the project from conception to completion. To Mam Ditas for her availability in checking our Data Flow Diagram 2 weeks before the THESA Defense. To Sir Bart for imparting to us the important concepts in J2ME Game Development during the months of December to February. To our Thesis Advisers Sir Manalo and Sir Bana for their guidance and encouragement for us to go for the extra mile. And finally, to all the people who had enjoyed playing our CUBIES Game.

            HAPPY CUBIES DAY!!!
