2nd CUBIES ANNIVERSARY (July 4, 2008)

Theme: “Relevance of the CUBIES Game in My Career”

This day marks the 2nd anniversary since the CUBIES Game was approved as a Thesis Proposal on July 4, 2006 during the Games of the VIIth Colympiad at UE Manila. This year’s theme is about the effect of CUBIES Game in UE-CCSS and in my career.

The development of the CUBIES Game is not as easy as it looks. Although all CCSS Students have a fundamental knowledge in Java (or more formally known as J2SE), it was not enough to make a Java Mobile Game out of it. Our group needed another Java Version that will fit with the demands of our Thesis. And indeed, J2ME met our needs. Our group had divided the tasks to perform. Argel and I focused on the programming aspect of the CUBIES Game using both J2ME Wireless Toolkit and Notepad++. While Vincent and Warren focused on the visual and audio aspect of the CUBIES Game using Adobe Photoshop and Sony Sound Forge.

Of course, the success of the CUBIES Game will not be possible without a J2ME Book, the guidance of Sir Bart and Two (2) J2ME Games (Hard Drive and Pocket Basketball) adopted from the Internet.

After I graduated in Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at the University of the East Manila, I still play the CUBIES Game every Sunday. Because each time I play it, I could still recall the challenges of our group in making it to be the “First Mobile Game in UE-CCSS”.

The burning passion that the CUBIES Game had gave me still lives on in doing my tasks at Destileria Limtuaco as an MIS Staff at the MIS Department for a year now.

At Destileria Limtuaco, I was exposed to Database Administration, SQL Scripting, Oracle Programming, PC Troubleshooting, and Web Development.

In the field of Database Administration, I learned how to grant or restrict user access to Oracle Programs. While in the creation of Sales and Summary Reports, the knowledge of SQL is of utmost importance. Since at Destileria Limtuaco, all transactions are stored in many tables of ORACLE Database. With the use of the usual SQL Script (usually in this format:  SELECT … FROM … WHERE … HAVING ... GROUP BY … ORDER BY …), I can retrieve only the columns from the selected tables that are needed. I usually write my SQL Scripts at Notepad++ (which also serves as programming text editor for J2ME during the development of the CUBIES Game). SQL Scripts written in Notepad++ is much easier to understand than writing it in Notepad or EditPad because SQL Syntaxes are in colour rather than simply plain black. After I open the ORACLE SQL Developer and go to Limtuaco Database (where important tables are stored), I simply paste my SQL Script and run it. When the desired output is generated, I can export it and convert into an Excel file. Then I finally send those Reports to the respective department who needs it whether be it on Sales, HR, Accounting, Warehouse, or Marketing Department.

On the other hand, I also had done programs at Destileria Limtuaco with the use of ORACLE Forms. It is an object-oriented and a procedural programming language at the same time. ORACLE Forms is object-oriented in the sense that you can create a textbox, checkbox, radio button, command button, and some other elements identical with Visual Basic 6. It is also procedural language since ORACLE Forms is greatly dependent on tables stored in an ORACLE Database. With the use of PL/SQL (a programming language that extends the use of SQL), there is an interaction between the user and the ORACLE Program. As the user adds, updates, or even deletes one or more records, the ORACLE program responds with alert, validation, or error messages depending on what the user had done. This behaviour is common in all programs of different programming languages.

In addition, I am also doing PC Troubleshooting tasks in the said company, which made me more aware in doing the usual computer routines like taking care and reformatting a PC, adding and installing necessary hardware peripherals, troubleshooting a printer, configure E-mail addresses, wire cabling, and installing the necessary software and Oracle Programs to the respective department.

And lastly, I also update existing websites for both Destileria Limtuaco and Asian Dragon Magazine using my knowledge of HTML, Cascading Style Sheets, and JavaScript. With the use of Amara Flash Softwares, 123 Flash Menu, Adobe Photoshop CS3, and Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, they were both created well eventually.

As a whole, the CUBIES Game reinforces all of my abilities in 4 important computer aspects in my work at Destileria Limtuaco – Database Programming, Object-Oriented Programming, Web Programming, and Graphic Designing. I recognize the CUBIES Game to be my greatest yet challenging experience during my 4 years of stay at UE-CCSS. It will also serve as a precursor for future Mobile Game Thesis at UE-CCSS in the years to come. Once again, I thank the CUBIES Game for giving me the confidence in facing the challenges of modern computing and programming.

            HAPPY CUBIES DAY TO EVERYONE!!!
